Henry Ford’s 1 Rule

There is one rule for industrialists and that is: make the best quality goods possible at the lowest cost possible, paying the highest wages possible.

Henry Ford

Background

In 1914, Henry Ford started an industrial revolution by more than doubling wages to $5 a day—a move that helped build the U.S. middle class and the modern economy.

In 1913, to help meet the growing demand for the Model T, Henry Ford turned his attention to improving the manufacturing processes. The business model Ford developed—production on a grand scale, performed by well-paid workers—spread throughout the world and became the manufacturing standard for everything from vacuum sweepers to cars, and more.

Henry Ford - Transforming the Assembly Line

Transforming the Assembly Line

The moving assembly line was perhaps Ford Motor Company’s single greatest contribution to the automotive manufacturing process. First implemented at the Highland Park plant in Michigan, the new technique allowed individual workers to stay in one place and perform the same task repeatedly on multiple vehicles that passed by them.

The moving assembly line proved tremendously efficient, helping the company to far surpass the production levels of its competitors while making its vehicles more affordable.

The $5-a-day Workday

After the success of the moving assembly line, Henry Ford had another transformative idea: in January 1914, he startled the world by announcing that Ford Motor Company would pay $5 a day to its workers. The pay increase would also be accompanied by a shorter workday (from nine to eight hours). While this rate didn’t automatically apply to every worker, it more than doubled the average autoworker’s wage.

While Henry’s primary objective was to reduce worker attrition—labor turnover from monotonous assembly line work was high—newspapers from all over the world reported the story as an extraordinary gesture of goodwill.

Thousands of Workers Flock to Detroit

After Ford’s announcement, thousands of prospective workers showed up at the Ford Motor Company employment office. People surged toward Detroit from the American South and the nations of Europe. As expected, employee turnover diminished. And, by creating an eight-hour day, Ford could run three shifts instead of two, increasing productivity.

Henry Ford had reasoned that since it was now possible to build inexpensive cars in volume, more of them could be sold if employees could afford to buy them. The $5 day helped better the lot of all American workers and contributed to the emergence of the American middle class. In the process, Henry Ford had changed manufacturing forever.

Keep It Clean! “A place for everything and everything in its place” is good business #ABCSuccessTip6

Success Tip #6 – Keep ‘It’ Clean

“A place for everything, and everything in its place” is good business.

Keep It Clean! A place for everything and everything in it's place is good business. #ABCSuccessTip6

Keep It Clean

Keep It Clean! A place for everything, and everything in it's place is good business #ABCSuccessTip6 Much has been written on the importance of image and first impressions. So much that I’d have thought there would be hardly any small business out there sporting an untidy shop front, bad phone manner, dirty car, scuffed shoes, tomato-sauce stained shirt, or a faulty link on their website. But there is!

Considering the money it takes to set up and maintain even the smallest business it doesn’t make sense not to tidy it up, prop it up, throw it out, clean it up, wipe it off, hide it, paint it, polish it, fix it, file it or flush it. And how long does it take to fix a broken link on a website?!

For More Space and Time, ‘Keep It Clean’

Keep It Clean! A place for everything, and everything in it's place is good business #ABCSuccessTip6 Mess reduces the space available for us to live or work in. It also wastes our valuable time as we rummage through the mess looking for things lost in the mess.

As a child I had an extremely neat relative who lived in a tiny and sparsely furnished house. Everything in her small house was functional and current, including food, bills and magazines. It was impossible to lose anything in her house.

When visitors would comment on her extreme neatness she would tell them it was because she hated housework with a vengeance, and she kept her house neat to avoid housework! It was always funny to hear her say that.

She would sometimes say she thought it took a lot of energy to be messy because everything takes twice as long to do or find in a messy house.

Her strange logic, “lazy people are neat and energetic people are messy,” has stuck with me for decades. And sometimes I’ll see a situation where I could swear she was right.

Regardless, I think most people agree it’s better to have more space and time available. And if you keep things neat and clean you will.

To Be In The Running For More Business, ‘Keep It Clean’

We’re judged by our appearance, whether we like it or not. In business, our ability to deliver is initially judged according to our appearance and reputation.

Are people being superficial when they judge us this way? Not really. Rapid judgements are essential skills we’ve developed to help us survive and progress as a species. We’re actually making judgements all the time, we’re just not always conscious of them. And most of our judgements are based on our physical senses, observations, personal standards and past experiences.

Because of that people will judge your ability to deliver their quality kitchen based on the state of your overflowing office trash can, or the mess on the back seat of your car from your trip to the beach last week-end.

So if you want to be in the running for more business it’s better to keep it clean!

Keep It Clean! A place for everything, and everything in it's place is good business #ABCSuccessTip6 Clean and Neat Inspires Confidence

The face of your business doesn’t need to be lavish or perfect, but it should be clean and neat.

Your business face is a tool of your trade, and rightly or wrongly it reflects as you, both personally and professionally. Basically, it’s one of the few things the market has to gauge your product or work on.

A clean and neatly presented business face inspires confidence in customers, staff, and us – the owners. What is yours saying about you?

Here’s to keeping it clean, and I wish you continued success,
