Running a business is probably the most expensive race you’ll ever run. And with no guarantee of winning, and plenty of competition, it’s important to cut costs wherever possible. That’s why free stuff rocks! Freebies save you money.

A few free pens here, a few free notepads there, a few free teabag samples. They all add up. Appreciate them. Use them. As they say, “Take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves.”

Every day, world-wide, millions of businesses give away ship loads of freebies. Yes, that’s right! I said ship loads!

Freebies are one of the best ways for sellers to connect with us, be remembered by us, and be positively talked about by us. And they know it. Freebies also come in all shapes and sizes. A friend of mine receives free yoga lessons from a local yoga instructor in exchange for freely displaying his brochures in her busy little beauty salon.

She’s extremely happy with her yoga classes that never run out, and he’s thrilled at having a living, breathing, walking, talking, human yoga class advertorial who is a leading local centre of influence. A lot of her salon clients have since joined his yoga classes. It’s a fabulous win-win for all of them, and a great barter story for me to share here with you!

How many businesses out there want to give you free stuff? Or want to do a mutually beneficial trade with you? Are you open to trading offers? Do you let people know you’re open?

Give-aways and test samples are very much part of standard market-penetration practices and strategies. And many freebies are great quality.

Actually, they have to be good to succeed as marketing tools. Think of free Twinings samples. Do you think they’d put low grade tea in their give-aways?

Many companies invest heavily in producing quality ‘sample’ offers specifically designed to get the community talking to them and to each other about the freebie.

Businesses give truckloads shiploads of freebies away with the very specific aim of starting a conversation with you, me, your family, my family, your friends, my friends. Do you say “yes” to freebies, samples and discount coupons? If “no”, why not?

Expos & Trade Shows – Freebie Heaven

Expos and Trade Shows are freebie heaven. They’re also great ways to connect with other people in business, because business people need to mix with other business people to stay current and fresh.

Next time there’s a local business expo or trade show in your area, take a bit of time out, and go along. Do you want your local business community to support youur business? Well try supporting theirs! Invest a few hours at your local business expo or trade show, Rotary community event, Lions Club fundraising Market Day, or Chamber of Commerce Business After 5. Good things happen when you get connected.

Business Is People – Be Social 

Introduce yourself. Chat with exhibitors. Ask questions about their business. Tell them about your business. Hand out your business cards. Connect. Connect. Connect. Attending trade shows or business expos (on either side of the display table) is a great way to build awareness of your brand.


And when you’re there enter every competition. Collect the show bags and check out the goodies. If you like something in a particfular bag, tell them. Watch a demonstration. Sit in on a workshop. Give feedback. Get involved. Speak with the presenters after the workshop and add them as new business contacts. Connect with them on social media platforms! All these actions are an investment in your future and the future of your business.

Trade shows and expos are also interesting places to observe people in business relating to each other. Plus they’re great places to mix, mingle, connect, and re-connect with your local business community. And on a personal note, they always help replenish my supply of Minties, sticky-note pads, pens, 4GB USB sticks, and cute, colourful stress balls.

After The Show

Yes, you’ll probably receive a whole bunch of phone calls for the next few days after entering competitions at a trade show. That’s okay. That’s just another reason it’s called a “Trade” show.

You traded your details, and the right to be contacted, in the hope of winning that strange looking Star Trek Klingon desk chair with the unpronouncable name (some assembly required).

When you do receive those follow-up calls, be polite, listen to their pitch, and then present your offer or counter-offer when you’ve both finished talking about their offer.

Remember,  these calls are free leads or referrral bases for your business. You’ve every right to discuss your product or service with them in the conversation. And if they’re good sales people they’ll be interested to know what your business does and needs.

So, in the end, it really doesn’t matter who initiated the call. The bottom line is, it’s a business call and they’re a live lead on the other end of the phone! That means it’s time to sell!

Chunking down takes large, difficult, time-consuming, or overwhelming projects or plans, and breaks them down into small, bite-sized, manageable, chunks or actions. These chunks or actions are then worked through, one-at-a-time, until the task is accomplished or project completed.

By reducing our projects down to a series of small-and-much-more-comfortable-to-contemplate-and-manage chunks we are far less likely to find the task daunting and overwhelming because all we need do is focus on one small, manageable part at a time.

I’ve chunked down everything from creating business plans, building a restaurant, developing and training in time-management, training sales staff, selling investment property over the phone, writing poetry, cleaning house, helping kids with school projects, losing weight, planning holidays and family banquets, writing blogs, building websites, and renovating properties.

With drive and determination we can reduce the largest of projects and goals down to a series of small, logical tasks capable of being worked through one-at-a-time. And sometimes by even the most inexperienced operators.

Chunking down is production-line planning, and it doesn’t get much easier or simpler than that!

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

1) Break the project, plan or goal down into small, manageable, bite-sized chunks and list them.

2) Prioritise these chunks according to their order of importance. Place important and urgent tasks at top of list. If you’re in business, place important sales calls and all tasks directly related to producing immediate income at the top of your list, alongside lunch and all other urgent and important tasks.

3) Nail your foot to the floor. Work through your list until complete.

4) Rush to medical centre, have tetanus shot, get nail removed!

Run The Day

The ‘secret to success’ when chunking down is not beauty, brains, brawn, IQ, EQ or R2D2.

The secret to success in chunking down is drive, persistence, committment and perseverence. Just continue chunking until you’ve worked your way through all the tasks on your to-do list. And don’t stop there. Once completed, select another goal or task and repeat the process.

So get chunking until there’s nothing left to chunk and you’re the one running your days. That’s a great kind of FREEDOM!

Begin At The End: Begin with the end in mind #ABCSuccessTip8I love success quotes because they make us think, and recently I was pondering this quote, “The secret to getting ahead is to begin.

Beginning something won’t necessarily get you ahead. People begin things all the time, with most business plans never getting off the kitchen table, and most dreams never realized.

The fact is, beginning something is only a tiny part of the secret to success, and starting at the beginning is not necessarily “a very good place to start.” The best place to start is knowing what outcome you want, and broadly (or bulletpoint) mapping it backwards from end to beginning.

Begin At The End: Begin with the end in mind. #ABCSuccessTip8Good business and marketing planning never starts at the beginning! If we started from the beginning, without working backwards first, we’d be working blind! We’d produce ‘bitsa’ plans that are completely unworkable and look like “The House That Jack Built,” with bitsa this and bitsa that everywhere. A real mess.

I always recommend beginning with the end vision in mind. Then work backwards with broad brush-strokes until you’re back to where you (and/or your business) are currently at.  The ‘working backwards’ process is the greatest single element in building a cohesive, solid, sustainable, logical, easily and speedily actionable plan, because it provides the distinct advantage of foresight! You already know 99% of what’s ahead, and you’ve planned for it.

The Secret To The Secret

As I was pondering,“The secret to getting ahead is to begin,” I realized that with some massaging it could be an interesting topic at a Chatuccino small business support morning, so I set to work. Here’s what evolved:

Take 1: The secret to getting ahead is to begin  + at the right place.” Because beginning at the right place saves time and money. The right place is the end. Begin at the end – Map backwards first.  Then, with the wireframe from that, you can map forward with confidence.

Take 2: “The secret to getting ahead is to begin at the right place, +  and ensure you’re heading in the right direction.” Because going the wrong way can be a disaster! Like in a fire, or on an outback roadtrip with limited fuel and water. Or planting 10 acres of the wrong type of aloe-vera, one unfit for human consumption, and not discovering your mistake until harvest (true story).

Take 3:”The secret to getting ahead is to begin at the right place, ensure you’re heading in the right direction, +  and then persevere until you’ve won!”  Because winners never quit!

I was now happy with the quote. It had become a simple “3-ingredient formula to success” that anyone could understand.

Yes, with 3 components, “beginning at the right place,” “heading in the right direction,” and “persevering until you’ve won, or you’re done,” and where all 3 are equally vital to success.


They are also particularly relevant to new or small businesses where man-power, finances, time and resources are often seriously limited.

Or where you only have sufficient funding or resources for just one bite of the cherry.

Or where you have backers to satisfy. That’s why they’re called backers. Because they’re always on your back!


So whether you’re:

  • starting a new business venture,
  • looking to add a new line to your existing product suite,
  • designing a new menu or product brochure,
  • expanding your territory,
  • hiring and training staff,
  • creating a sales presentation,
  • building a website,
  • designing a marketing campaign,
  • looking to lose weight,
  • planning a home renovation,
  • planning a holiday,
  • teaching kids to study,
  • running a seminar,
  • preparing a Sunday morning brunch,
  • or any number of other projects, goals and plans, the secret to succeeding is to begin with your desired result in mind, map your plan backwards, set to work on the plan, monitor and measure your progress regularly to ensure you’re heading in the right direction, and then continue to persevere until you get there.

A cluttered workspace with files, folders, coupons, pics, tools, lunch wrappers, nail clippers, empty pens, old bills, filled ashtrays and a wild array of assorted mish-mash scattered and piled on top of each other is a huge time-waster, brain-drain and distraction.

Eclectic still-life settings have their place, but not on a functioning desk or workbench. If you Keep It Simple! Simplicity is Good Business #ABCSuccessTip7 need that kind of atmosphere try creating a decorative wall, side-table, or shelf in the corner of your office and keep your desk and workspace separate, simple, uncluttered, on track and lazer-focused.

Keep It Simple! Simplicity is Good Business #ABCSuccessTip7 Ever been put to sleep by a speaker? I have. A Corel Draw teacher back in 1992.

My eyelids were allergic to his voice. A couple of minutes of him talking and I was asleep. If he’d opened a hypnotism or insomniac clinic he’d have made a fortune!

If you’re in sales, or run workshops and events, be aware of the body language of your audience, guests or prospects. If you spot someone going to sleep, and someone else poking themselves in the head with a fork to stay awake, that’s good feedback. It’s saying you need to pick up your pace, and make your presentation more relevant or interesting. Keep your message sharp, brief and to the point. Try altering your voice occassionally. And if possible walk around.

If you present for a living and suspect you’ve room for improvement I strongly recommend taking a brief public speaking course or joining a local Toastmasters group.

So much that I’d have thought there would be hardly any small business out there sporting an untidy shop front, bad phone manner, dirty car, scuffed shoes, tomato-sauce stained shirt, or a faulty link on their website. But there is!

Considering the money it takes to set up and maintain even the smallest business it doesn’t make sense not to tidy it up, prop it up, throw it out, clean it up, wipe it off, hide it, paint it, polish it, fix it, file it or flush it. And how long does it take to fix a broken link on a website?!

For More Space and Time, ‘Keep It Clean’

Keep It Clean! A place for everything, and everything in it's place is good business #ABCSuccessTip6 Mess reduces the space available for us to live or work in. It also wastes our valuable time as we rummage through the mess looking for things lost in the mess.

As a child I had an extremely neat relative who lived in a tiny and sparsely furnished house. Everything in her small house was functional and current, including food, bills and magazines. It was impossible to lose anything in her house.

When visitors would comment on her extreme neatness she would tell them it was because she hated housework with a vengeance, and she kept her house neat to avoid housework! It was always funny to hear her say that.

She would sometimes say she thought it took a lot of energy to be messy because everything takes twice as long to do or find in a messy house.

Her strange logic, “lazy people are neat and energetic people are messy,” has stuck with me for decades. And sometimes I’ll see a situation where I could swear she was right.

Regardless, I think most people agree it’s better to have more space and time available. And if you keep things neat and clean you will.

We’re judged by our appearance, whether we like it or not. In business, our ability to deliver is initially judged according to our appearance and reputation.

Are people being superficial when they judge us this way? Not really. Rapid judgements are essential skills we’ve developed to help us survive and progress as a species. We’re actually making judgements all the time, we’re just not always conscious of them. And most of our judgements are based on our physical senses, observations, personal standards and past experiences.

Because of that people will judge your ability to deliver their quality kitchen based on the state of your overflowing office trash can, or the mess on the back seat of your car from your trip to the beach last week-end.

So if you want to be in the running for more business it’s better to keep it clean!

2) Now you need to get to know your ideal customer.

Once you and your ideal customer are connected you need to learn a little more about them, and their buying preferences and habits.

You need to know things like:

why they chose their current supplier,

what they like about them,

when and

how often they buy from them,

who they deal with within that organisation, and

Then be ready to stand and deliver!

Gaye Crispin's Business Clinic - Success Tip 4 - Bad Breath Is Bad BusinessI still remember him. Or at least I remember his breath. The breath of a job interviewee over 25 years ago.

He presented well. His suit and shoes were immaculate. But his breath! His breath hailed from the very bowels of hell itself and could strip paint off walls.

Staff sitting a few feet away from my desk, and overcome by the fumes, were gesturing half-comical-half-threatening signals that screamed “DO NOT HIRE THAT MAN!!!”

What could I do? I felt sorry for the guy. It was obvious he really wanted the job, but the stench – it was killing me! And a breath like that would kill any business.

Gaye Crispin's Business Clinic - Success Tip 4 - Bad Breath Is Bad BusinessSince then I’ve learned a little about bad breath, what causes bad breath and how bad breath can negatively impact on just about any business.

The good news is it can easily be managed and overcome because not all bad breath is due to poor dental hygiene, or bad health.

I’ve also learned that some bad breath is actually work-related!

3 common causes of bad breath.

Gaye Crispin's Business Clinic - Bad Breath is Bad Business 21) Lots of talking. Roles that require a lot of talking can cause bad breath that would make “The Toxic Avenger” jealous. Some examples of talking jobs are public speaking, consulting, sales, demonstrating, teaching, advisor roles, etc.


2) Not eating breakfast. The breath of many people who don’t eat breakfast could fuel a rocketship to the moon, but eating breakfast can fix that. Somehow, food seems to put a lid on some of the the oral ‘night gases’ we produce, so eating even a light breakfast like a banana or museli bar can sometimes make all the difference.

3) A dry mouth. A dry mouth after a particularly long phone conversation or sales appointment can transform you into “The Breath-Monster From Hell.”  Just drinking a glass of water afterwards with a squeeze of fresh lemon or a sprig of mint in it can work wonders for dry mouth breath odour.

They say, “Only your friends will tell you if your breath stinks.” 

Be aware of other people’s body language. What is their body language saying about your breath?

You could ask friends and family if they have ever noticed you with bad breath.  If “yes,” try using a mouth wash and keeping a few breath mints handy at all times. If this doesn’t work see your doctor, naturopath or herbalist.

And of course, the most important thing you can do to maintain good oral hygiene is visit your dentist and dental hygienist regularly.

What ever you do, don’t do nothing. It’s your business and a good fresh breath is good for business.
